Phil Berger Jr. to run for vacant 6th Congressional District seat

Rockingham County District Attorney Phil Berger Jr. will announce plans to run for the 6th District Congressional seat currently held by US Rep. Howard Coble, who announced plans to retire almost two weeks ago.

Phil Berger Jr., a Republican who is the son of NC Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger Sr., will announce his candidacy at Bethany Community Middle School in Reidsville on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., political operative Dallas Woodhouse confirmed. Woodhouse is the former state director of American For Prosperity North Carolina.

Greensboro City Councilman Zack Matheny, a moderate Republican who has supported economic development projects such as the Greensboro Aquatic Center and the expansion of the Greensboro Science Center, told the News & Record that he is seriously considering running for the seat. The newspaper has also reported that Lawndale Baptist Church associate pastor Mark Walker, High Point GOP activist Don Webb and Jamestown area pastor Dan Collison have said they plan to run for the seat.

Former UNC System general Counsel Laura Fjeld is a Democratic candidate for the seat.
