Vivian Burke to be honored with bust in City Hall

The general government committee of the Winston-Salem City Council will consider a resolution tonight to dedicate a bust to honor Mayor Pro Tem Vivian Burke to be placed in City Hall.

Mayor Allen Joines requested the bust from his fellow council members in a Nov. 22 letter.

"Council member Burke has served admirably in her 36 years on city council and has been a trailblazer for electoral politics in Winston-Salem, serving as one of the first black women elected to city council and the first black mayor pro tempore," Joines wrote. "Mrs. Burke has worked tirelessly during her 36 years of service as a member of city council to elevate the condition of the disenfranchised and needy members of the community and has significantly improved relations between predominantly underrepresented groups through a number of initiatives which include the creation of the human relations department. Mrs. Burke's deep personal and professional commitment to advancing the community has resulted in her receipt of numerous local, state and national awards which have brought prominence to the city of Winston-Salem."

Joines recommended that a bust bearing Burke's likeness be permanently displayed in City Hall, adding that community leaders and personal friends of the mayor pro tem "have raised all of the funds necessary for the creation of this well-deserved honor."
