Steven M. Hayes named new director of Guilford Nonprofit Consortium

STEVEN M. HAYES

Guilford Nonprofit Consortium is pleased to announce that Steven M. Hayes will become its new director, effective March 17.

“Steve is the ideal person to lead the Consortium at this exciting time in its evolution,” said Steve Sumerford, Consortium board chair. “His background and experience are a perfect match for the Consortium, which undoubtedly will benefit from his ideas and connections. We had many very impressive candidates, but Steve rose to the top of the list. This is a great day for our local nonprofit community!”

Hayes comes to the Consortium after a long career at the Guilford County Department of Social Services, where he most recently served as its community relations officer. Prior to that role, he served as social services division director, human resources manager, social work trainer and coordinator of Families for Kids, a program that improves upon the foster care system and places children with special needs in adoptive homes.

He also is a member of the Work Force Development Board and Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and has previously been engaged with the Court Watch Board, American Society for Public Administration, the N.C. Social Services Association, Partners Ending Homelessness and America Professional Partnership for Lithuanian Education.

“I am very excited about leading the Guilford Nonprofit Consortium, which is a critical resource for our local nonprofit community,” Hayes said. He noted that his previous experience includes grant writing, inter-governmental relations, direct case management and organizational development functions. “More importantly,” he added, “my experience has allowed me to develop relationships across Guilford County in both nonprofits and government that will benefit the Consortium.”

In his new role, Hayes succeeds Donna Newton, who stepped down to become the new director of The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s Workforce Initiative.

“The Consortium has become an essential part of the fabric of Guilford County and has strengthened the state of the nonprofits that provide critical services and outstanding enrichment to our community,” said Tara Sandercock, senior vice president of Foundation and Community Relations at The Community Foundation, which is a founding partner of the Consortium as well as its fiscal agent. “Steve Hayes will ably lead the Consortium into its second decade.”

Guilford Nonprofit Consortium was borne out of efforts in 2003 by The Community Foundation and Weaver Foundation to establish a collaborative of nonprofit organizations in Guilford County that fosters mutual assistance and support within the nonprofit community to create a more efficient and effective nonprofit sector. The Consortium now boasts more than 250 member organizations.

“The Guilford Nonprofit Consortium has been essential in helping its members create a better community for us all,” Hayes said. “I look forward to helping Consortium members tell their story by improving collaboration with members, government and business, fully using technology and building paths of communication."

In addition to The Community Foundation, current funders of the Consortium include the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation, Cemala Foundation, Cone Health Foundation, Hayden-Harman Foundation, Weaver Foundation and American Express.
