RJ Reynolds High School Set to Break ground on New Practice Field

Student-Athletes Celebrate Getting an
On-Campus Practice Field of Their Own

"Officials at R.J. Reynolds High School announced they will break ground in the next few months on a much-needed practice field off Reynolda Road, across from the Children’s Home. The City-County Planning Board unanimously approved building the field on school property last December. The field is being built using private funds that were raised as part of the Home Field Advantage Campaign, an initiative spearheaded by school parents, alumni and boosters to bring home a multi-sport stadium on Northwest Blvd.

Of the need for a practice field, RJ Reynolds Principal Pat Olsen said, “The lack of on-campus facilities presents a barrier to participation for a number of students we serve. It finally is acknowledged that RJR students should have the same availability to campus facilities as their peers in each of the other high schools in Forsyth County.”

Stan Dean, spokesperson for Home Field Advantage added, “This practice field is the first step of our three-part campaign plan that also includes renovations to 1923 Bryson Gym and building the multi-sport stadium between the gym and Wiley Middle School.” The practice field and the future stadium are two separate but related projects. Both will serve all the male and female field sports and support 12 teams as well as cheerleading and dance squads, marching band and ROTC. RJR student-athletes currently travel to 11 different fields for practice and games.

About the Home Field Advantage Campaign: HFA, Inc. is a 501(c)3 dedicated to raising funds in order to address a long-standing inequity and provide all R.J. Reynolds High School students the opportunity to participate in athletics and band, and express their school pride on their own playing field.
