"Steve Pemberton, the chief diversity officer and divisional vice president for Walgreens, will be the speaker for Winston-Salem State University’s (WSSU) 2014 commencement on Friday, May 16, at 9:45 a.m. in Bowman Gray Stadium.
Recognized as a leader on matters of diversity and inclusion, Pemberton was a ward of the state for much of his childhood. His memoir, “A Chance in the World: An Orphan Boy, a Mysterious Past, and How He Found a Place called Home,” chronicles his difficult path through foster care and his determined search for his family.
At Walgreens, he directs activities to help serve diverse markets and populations, including customers in medically underserved areas, food deserts and urban areas, as well as strengthen relationships with diverse suppliers and communities. Prior to assuming his role as Walgreens’ first diversity officer, Pemberton was the chief diversity officer and vice president of diversity and inclusion at the global online careers website Monster.com.
Pemberton also currently serves on several boards including The Home for Little Wanderers and UNCAN to provide guidance and inspiration to children in need. The Pemberton Fund for the Future has been established at The Home."
