"Greensboro City Council has selected Tom Carruthers (photo attached) to replace Terry Wood as interim city attorney. Wood stepped down today after serving as interim city attorney since February 26, 2014. Carruthers’ contract starts Wednesday, April 9, and Council will officially vote to affirm his hire during its April 15 meeting.
Carruthers has been an assistant city attorney for Greensboro since 2009. According to Mayor Nancy Vaughan, Council chose Carruthers because of his understanding of current issues facing the City. “We’re excited to have Tom move into the lead position in the attorney’s office,” says Vaughan. “From a legal aspect, there’s not much that has occurred in the City over the last several months that Tom has not been involved in and his leadership has been appreciated. That leadership is what we are looking for from him in the near future as he works to bolster the attorney’s office to enhance the service it provides to City Council and the City’s departments.”
This is Carruthers’ second stint as interim city attorney, having briefly served in the capacity in June of 2011. Before joining the City of Greensboro in 2009, Carruthers was an assistant district attorney for Guilford County for three years. He was in private practice for 20 years prior to his public work, serving as a litigator for a broad range of clients.
Terry Wood completes his latest run as city attorney after temporarily filling the role over the last several weeks to oversee the office during its transition in leadership. Wood retired as city attorney in 2010 after serving in the City’s legal department for 24 years."
