Greensboro College's student newspaper, The Collegian, and its student literary magazine, The Lyre, both won awards in the 2013 Statewide College Media Awards.
The awards were to have been announced at the N.C. College Media Association conference Feb. 15 in Asheville, but weather-related road conditions led to the event's cancellation. The association announced the prize winners today.
The 2013 edition of The Lyre received an Honorable Mention for Two-Page Spread for two side-by-side photos by Ginger Williamson, a former instructor of art and photography at the college. It also received an Honorable Mention in nonfiction for "My Father's Story," by Melissa Rodriguez, a December 2013 graduate in English and Communication Studies.
The Collegian received second place in opinion writing for the column "Coaching Is About Motivating, Not Bullying," by then-Collegian managing editor Jonathan Hunter, also a December 2013 graduate in English and Communication Studies. The column was published inthe newspaper's April 17, 2013, edition.
The staffs of the publications are advised by L. Wayne Johns, associate professor of English and Communication Studies.
