"In addition to our regular programming, RiverRun presents free public screenings to students and participating schools throughout the year and during the run of the annual Film Festival. This education outreach initiative, Films With Class, is one of the most active components of RiverRun's year-round activities, and unique among film festivals. Through these efforts, RiverRun helps thousands of students understand the diversity of the human experience and become better global citizens. Since 2009, RiverRun has visited dozens of schools and delivered life-changing experiences to more than 18,000 students in Forsyth County. As part of the Films With Class educational outreach program, sponsored in part by Wells Fargo, this spring RiverRun will privately screen three films for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools and work with K-12 educators to find new ways of incorporating these great films into the classroom. RiverRun will also hold public screenings of the films during the festival. All screenings will feature guest speakers. The films selected for RiverRun's Films With Class Festival screenings are as follows: LANDSCAPES OF THE HEART: THE ELIZABETH SPENCER STORY (Directed by Rebecca Cerese) This documentary chronicles the life of Elizabeth Spencer, a controversial Southern author still writing in her nineties. Spencer authored the novella "Light in the Piazza" and other poignant stories of race, gender and sexuality during a defining period of American history. This film is presented in partnership with Bookmarks Book Festival. PARTICLE FEVER (Directed by Mark Levinson) A science documentary for professionals and laypeople alike, Particle Fever follows the inside story of six brilliant scientists seeking to unravel the mysteries of the universe, documenting the successes and setbacks in the planet's most significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough, from the CERN Large Hadron Collider to the discovery of the elusive Higgs boson (or "God particle"). IF YOU BUILD IT (Directed by Patrick Creadon) This heart-warming documentary follows a designer-activist duo to the poorest county in North Carolina, where they create America's most innovative classroom for 10 students who are guided through a year-long design and build project to help transform their community and their lives. Thanks to Our 2014 Sponsors The sponsors of the 2014 RiverRun International Film Festival help sustain the organization's mission to foster a greater appreciation of cinema and a deeper understanding of the many people, cultures and perspectives of our world through regular interaction with films and filmmakers. RiverRun would like to thank the 2014 Title Sponsors - The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, Reynolds American and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Volunteer Registration is Now Open Volunteers are needed to assist in all areas of the RiverRun International Film Festival. Each year hundreds of dedicated volunteers lend their time and energy to the Volunteer Program at RiverRun, and they are one of the most essential elements of putting on our ten day Festival. Please note that all volunteers, both returning and new, must register every year. Visit the Get Involved section of our website to find out more about volunteer registration, or contact jane@riverrunfilm.com.
