RIVERRUN ANNOUNCES 2014 ‘FILMS WITH CLASS’ LINEUP

The RiverRun International Film Festival today announced three films to be showcased during the upcoming Festival (April 4-13, 2014). These films, part of RiverRun’s ‘Films with Class’ educational outreach program, will be privately screened by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School students as well as shown to the general public during the Festival.

RiverRun’s ‘Films with Class’ program, sponsored in part by Wells Fargo, introduces students to films they wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to see,” said Jane McKim, RiverRun’s Community Director and former educator. “These films not only enrich and enhance school curriculum, they provoke and spark insightful dialogue which in turn contributes significantly to the learning process.”

In addition to its regular programming, RiverRun presents free public screenings to students and participating schools throughout the year and during the run of the annual Festival. Films with Class is the most active component of RiverRun’s year-round activities, and unique among film festivals. Through these efforts, RiverRun helps thousands of students understand the diversity of the human experience and the need for global understanding.

Films with Class works with K-12 educators and curriculum coordinators to find new ways of incorporating great films into the classroom. The program selects films from around the world and creates lesson plans that enhance established curriculum goals. RiverRun also holds complimentary student-audience screenings during the Festival that offer students the “festival experience.” Since 2009, Films with Class has visited dozens of schools and provided enlightening experiences through film to more than 18,000 students in Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools.

The films selected for RiverRun’s Films with Class 2014 Festival screenings are as follows:

LANDSCAPES OF THE HEART (Directed by: Rebecca Cerese) – This documentary chronicles the life of Elizabeth Spencer, a controversial Southern author still writing in her nineties. Spencer authored the novella “Light in the Piazza” and other poignant stories of race, class and sexuality during a defining period of American history. (Director Rebecca Cerese, Producer Sharon Swanson and Elizabeth Spencer will be in attendance*)

PARTICLE FEVER (Directed by: Mark Levinson) -- A science documentary for professionals and laypeople alike, PARTICLE FEVER follows the inside story of six brilliant scientists seeking to unravel the mysteries of the universe, documenting the successes and setbacks in the planet’s most significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough, from the CERN Large Hadron Collider to the discovery of the elusive Higgs boson (or “God particle”), the infinitesimal, hitherto-hypothetical cornerstone of the whole field of particle physics, and a key ingredient in the creation of the universe. (Special guest(s) will be in attendance for discussion post-screening.)

IF YOU BUILD IT (Directed by: Patrick Creadon) – This heart-warming documentary follows a designer-activist duo to the poorest county in North Carolina, where they create America’s most innovative classroom for ten students who are guided through a year-long design and build project to help transform their community and their lives. (Special guest(s) will be in attendance for discussion post-screening.)
