Greenhill Center announces staffing reorganization



"Over the last nine months Greenhill has been reviewing its organizational plan and structure with the help of a Task Force consisting of two board members and two external members. The goal from this process was to identify ways to make Greenhill a stronger, more sustainable organization into the future. The Task Force looked at every area—exhibitions, art sales, contributed income, expenses, board governance, and staffing. They have concluded their work and have made some key recommendations which will be implemented over the next year.

One change that is being implemented immediately is the reorganization of Greenhill’s staff structure. Greenhill is realigning staff both in response to economic realities and to better position the organization for future opportunities. Restructuring is designed to help maximize the value derived from the limited number of employees demanded by a sound economic model. The realignment means reducing the number of positions that report to the executive director so she can spend more dedicated time to the development and external relations aspects of our organization and focus all programming under one position. While Greenhill is excited about the efficiencies and opportunities identified, it is with sadness that we announce that one dedicated employee has learned that her position will be eliminated.

It was not an easy decision, but the position of Director of Education and Community Partnerships has been eliminated, a position held by Mary Young. Mary has been with Greenhill for over 20 years, has been a valuable and dedicated member of the Greenhill family, and is beloved by the Greenhill community. Mary was an integral part of the vision for ArtQuest, the Hemphill Library Partnership, and many other collaborative projects over the years. She introduced the arts to many children and families in ArtQuest, and always provided a spark of creativity and fun whenever she entered into the ArtQuest studios. Mary previously served as acting executive director and associate director, and has worn many other hats during her tenure. Mary is an incredible artist, humanist, and community member, and the board and staff all wish her the very best as she moves on to new opportunities.
 Other details will follow, but following are the major alignment changes:
  • The number of staff members who currently report to the Executive Director will be reduced from six to three.
  • A new position, “Director of Operations,” has been filled by Emily Shank, formerly the Executive Coordinator and Shop Manager. She now oversees all staff working in the communication, membership, visitor services, events and retail areas.
  • A Director of Programs position will be filled within the next month.
  • A number of internal functions within Greenhill will be realigned to create synergies and efficiencies, allowing Greenhill to be better prepared to do the important business of this great organization.
  • Greenhill will work with Teresa Moore, Moore Accounting Services, Inc. as Controller.
Laura Way, Executive Director, and the Board of Director’s at Greenhill are saddened by Mary’s departure but confident that the new staff structure will put the organization in a better position to handle the challenges and opportunities ahead and give our community, supporters, members and artists the services they deserve.
