Whole Foods, Brings Strollin’ Colon to Greensboro/Cone Health

"An unusual but very important interactive health exhibit comes to Greensboro on Saturday, Mar. 8. The Strollin’ Colon is an exhibit that teaches the importance of screenings for colon cancer. The free exhibit is sponsored by the Cone Health Cancer Center and Whole Foods Market Greensboro Friendly. The exhibit will be in Whole Foods Market Parking lot and will be open from noon until 3 p.m.
The Strollin’ Colon is an inflatable model colon that is 12 feet long, 10 feet high and 10 feet wide. Oncology clinicians from Cone Health will escort visitors through the exhibit to learn about polyps, ulcerative colitis and the various stages of colon cancer. Members of LeBauer Endoscopy will be there to answers questions about colorectal cancer screenings.
Visitors to the Strollin’ Colon can also take part in a raffle. For $5 they can enjoy a healthy turkey or veggie burger along with veggie chips and a drink.
According to the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and the second leading cancer killer of American men and women. It can often be prevented by removing pre-cancerous polyps which are often found during a routine screening colonoscopy. In fact, the death rate from colon cancer has been declining due in part to screenings.
The staff of Cone Health Cancer Center treated 245 cases of colon and rectal cancers in 2012 through its specialized program. Cone Health Cancer Center has been ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation in medical excellence for cancer care by CareChex®, a division of Comparion.
